Applying Audiences to Campaigns, Ad Sets, and Ad Groups

Building a WasteNot audience is only the first step. The audience also needs to be applied in the right place — and the right place varies by ad platform and campaign structure.

This guide explains how to apply exclusions in WasteNot so your campaigns use them correctly.

The basic principle

Apply each audience where it matches the campaign's job.

For example:

  • Prospecting campaigns should avoid past customers and current subscribers

  • Win-back campaigns may include lapsed customers but exclude recent purchasers

  • Retention campaigns may include existing customers but exclude non-customers

  • Product-specific campaigns may exclude customers who already bought that product

Do not apply the same rule everywhere. A good exclusion in one campaign can be the wrong exclusion in another.

Understanding campaign structures

Ad platforms use different naming for their hierarchy levels:

LevelMetaGooglePurpose
BroadestCampaignCampaignBudget and campaign type
MiddleAd setAd groupAudience and targeting controls
GranularAdKeyword / AssetIndividual creatives or keywords

When you apply a WasteNot audience in the platform, you specify which level it should apply to. Most exclusions apply at the ad set level (Meta) or ad group level (Google), which is where audience targeting typically lives.

How to apply exclusions in WasteNot

  1. Go to Audiences in WasteNot

  2. Select the audience you want to apply

  3. Click Add Target and choose your ad platform (Meta or Google)

  4. Select the specific campaigns and ad sets (or ad groups) where you want the exclusion to apply

  5. Click Save

WasteNot will sync the audience to your ad platform and apply it to the campaigns and ad sets you selected. The audience updates automatically as your customer data changes.

Common exclusion strategies

Campaign typeAudience to applyCampaign goal
ProspectingPast customers, recent purchasersReach net-new customers
RetargetingNon-purchasers (traffic-based)Warm up engaged prospects
Win-backLapsed customers (not recent purchasers)Re-engage dormant customers
Retention / UpsellNon-customers, product-specific exclusionsDeepen existing customer relationships

The pattern: each campaign type has a specific audience goal. Apply exclusions that keep the campaign focused on that goal and prevent budget drift toward irrelevant audiences.

See Example Audience Rules for detailed rule examples and Why Existing Customers Belong in Owned Channels for strategic guidance on which audiences to prioritize.

What to review after applying audiences

  • Sync status: Check that the audience synced successfully in WasteNot

  • Campaign confirmation: View the audience details in WasteNot — you should see the names of the campaigns and ad sets where it's applied. This confirms the exclusion is connected.

  • Audience size: Is the excluded audience size reasonable? (Not too small to matter, not so large it's blocking good audiences)

  • Other campaigns unaffected: Non-targeted campaigns should still reach their full audience

Troubleshooting

Audience is not syncing to my ad platform

Check that the audience target is configured correctly in WasteNot. Verify the ad account is connected and authenticated. Confirm the audience has enough matched users to meet the platform's minimum threshold. Check for any sync errors in WasteNot's sync status dashboard.

Audience appears in WasteNot but shows zero size in the ad platform

The audience may still be processing — wait 2–4 hours. Check Audience Match Counts to understand match rates. Verify you're using the correct identifier types (email, phone) that your platform supports. Review data source completeness — if customer data is sparse, match rates will be low.

I applied an exclusion but it's not showing as active in the ad platform

Confirm the exclusion was saved in WasteNot (check sync status). Wait 24 hours for the ad platform to fully process and activate the exclusion. Check the ad platform's minimum audience size requirements — if the audience is below threshold, the exclusion won't activate. Verify you selected the correct campaigns/ad sets/ad groups in WasteNot.

I want different exclusions for different campaigns

Build separate audiences in WasteNot for different use cases (e.g., "past customers" for prospecting, "recent purchasers" for retention). Apply each audience to the appropriate campaigns. This gives you more control than applying one broad exclusion everywhere.

  1. Build one clear audience rule in WasteNot

  2. Add a high-spend campaign as the target

  3. Apply the audience to the campaign in WasteNot

  4. Wait 2–4 hours for sync to complete

  5. View the audience details in WasteNot to confirm campaigns are listed

  6. Compare baseline metrics to see impact
